John Lim, Managing Partner of LimNexus LLP, was honored with the Spirit of Excellence Award by the American Bar Association Commission on Racial and Ethnic Diversity in the Profession before a full crowd at the ABA’s Midyear Meeting on January 26, 2019 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Spirit of Excellence Award is a prestigious honor celebrating lawyers excel both in their professional career and in their work to promote racial and ethnic diversity in the legal profession.
When John founded LimNexus more than 30 years ago, he was determined to demonstrate the excellence that could be achieved with a boutique firm of ethnically diverse lawyers. This was only part of a larger pursuit of “more inclusiveness throughout our society,” as he remarked during his acceptance speech. John’s many achievements include his historic role in helping Koreatown to recover from the devastating effects of civil unrest in 1992 and leadership of civil rights causes and organizations, bar associations, and other nonprofits that are dedicated to increasing inclusivity and social justice. As John explained, his pursuit of social justice spawned from the prejudice and inequality he experienced as an immigrant, and is fueled by the demonstrated richness and strength this country enjoys because of the diversity of its people. In his view, “it is no coincidence that the more diverse we got as a country, the stronger we became.” John’s call to action by fellow lawyers to protect civil rights and resist those who seek to divide us drew standing applause.
The ABA also honored Pamela Jones Harbour, senior vice president and legal officer at Herbalife, Willie E. Gary, a Florida attorney who is one of the Top 50 attorneys in the U.S., and the Honorable Peter M. Reyes, Jr. who sits on the Minnesota Court of Appeals.
